Podcast Interview:
RC: Hello everyone, this is Liz Harvey coming to you from our studios in New York City, where we are dedicated to bringing you top quality advice from many of the leading expert professionals across the U.S.
In today’s episode, we are speaking with Dr. Warren J. Bleiweiss about the exciting field of regenerative medicine. He is a graduate of New York University School of Medicine and is board-certified in both anesthesiology and pain management. His long list of accomplishments includes leadership experience as a hospital anesthesiology department director, the inventor of a patented medical device, and the founder of one of the first multidisciplinary pain management centers in New Jersey. He is a strong believer of the body’s innate ability to heal itself. He believes his job, as a physician, is to find a way to activate that healing mechanism by using non-surgical treatment protocols without utilizing drugs.
Dr. Bleiweiss has been practicing regenerative medicine protocols such as ozone, stem cells and PRP. He pioneered the oxygen ozone disc injection therapy to treat herniated discs in the United States and North America, which is a powerful regenerative treatment. This medical ozone injection procedure has enabled the vast majority of his patients to recover from herniated disc conditions without surgery or medication.
Dr. Bleiweiss is a member of the American Academy of stem cells Physicians. He has been successfully treating patients for over 30 years. Dr. Bleiweiss specializes in minimally invasive alternative treatments that heal patients without surgery or potentially harmful medications. His treatment protocols are specifically designed to activate the body’s innate ability to recover and regenerate. His practice has been producing excellent results by utilizing these alternative methods.
We previously discussed oxygen ozone treatments with Dr. Bleiweiss and today we are focusing on another aspect of regenerative medicine, regenerative medicine treatments for thinning hair and hair loss.
Hello Dr. Bleiweiss, how are you today?
Dr. Warren Bleiweiss: I’m very good. Thank you.
RC: Well, thank you so much for joining me.
For someone looking for help solving their hair loss problem, or their issue with thinning hair, what are some regenerative medicine treatments that can help and how do they actually work?
Dr. Warren Bleiweiss: Okay, well I first want to start with what happens with thinning hair. The process that occurs is that the hairs in each follicle reduce in number and what remains, the hair that remains are not as thick, they’re smaller and thinner than the hairs that were there originally. They’re also weaker.
The goal of a regenerative medicine treatment is to increase the number of hairs per follicle and increase the thickness of the hairs, and to strengthen the follicle so the hairs stop falling out. The treatments that I use are very specifically tailored for each individual. That’s why I do a detailed evaluation before each procedure and I will go over the treatment options and the treatments that are discussed in detail at the time of the consultation.
One treatment is medical ozone injections. It’s a super-charged form of oxygen and it acts by the redux mechanism to stimulate the cell cycle to enter the division phase. Ozone also increases blood flow, it increases lymphatic drainage, and decreases inflammation and it also helps the cells to cope with oxidative stress, so it’s a very powerful regenerative agent.
There are also peptides that can be injected. Peptides are essentially proteins and these can be injected for cosmetic reasons and they also stimulate the cells to divide and they have a lot of growth factors.
And then there’s PRP, which has a lot of growth factors and it’s just very important to note that all PRP is not the same. There are literally hundreds, maybe even thousands of different types of PRP preparations and it’s very important to choose the proper PRP that will stimulate growth of the hair.
Will treatments work if someone is completely bald, with no sign of hair growth or is it too late?
Dr. Warren Bleiweiss: It’s too late if the follicle is completely gone. So, if there’s shiny skin with no follicle, it’s not going to work and that patient is a good candidate for hair transplants. But, even if there’s very thin hair present in the follicle, then the treatment has a very high chance of working. And even with someone who looks fairly bald, but there’s like this fuzz or very thin hair and we know that it’s not going to grow a full head of hair, it’s very helpful to have those hairs become more numerous and thicker because even if you’re going for transplantation, there’s less area that has to be covered with the transplants and having your natural hair thicker and more numerous in each follicle helps give it a more natural look.
Why should someone choose a regenerative medicine treatment instead of other treatment methods for restoring hair growth?
Dr. Warren Bleiweiss: The regenerative medicine treatments would be used if other treatments such as Rogaine and Propecia have not produced significant results and if somebody wants to avoid taking medications with side effects. And if you Google the side effects of Rogaine or Propecia, I mean, that alone can make your hair fall out because there are lot of significant side effects. Regenerative medicine treatments have no significant side effects and they’re actually good for the body. The treatments that we discussed, for example, ozone, are actually very beneficial to health, in general, and a lot of people use ozone for general health reasons. It’s also important to note that after the hair growth has occurred and stabilized, no ongoing treatment is needed. There’s just maintenance, maybe every three to six months, depending on the individual, so you don’t have to apply something every day. You don’t have to take a pill every day, so that’s a very good benefit.
If someone is interested in trying a regenerative medicine treatment, how would they get started and what is the process?
Dr. Warren Bleiweiss: Well, I always start with an initial evaluation because that is one of the most important aspects, if not the most important aspect of the treatment, because each patient is not the same and each patient’s hair loss isn’t the same. For example, you can’t treat a young woman how has hair loss or thinning hair the same as you’re going to treat an older gentleman with thinning hair. And there are also very specific causes of hair loss that have to be addressed. Hair could be lost with stress. It could be lost with hormonal changes or certain medications. So, the consultation is very important. The treatments I use, I’ve said this before, they’re not cookie cutter treatments. They’re very tailored to the particular individual and at the time of consultation, I’ll discuss why I’ve chosen a particular treatment, what’s involved in the treatment and why I feel it’s the best treatment for the patient.
The procedure can be done the same day and then there will be a follow up evaluation. Now, each time a patient comes for a follow up evaluation, I personally evaluate the patient and determine if an additional treatment is necessary and if the same treatment is necessary or we have to switch to a different treatment.
