Joint health tends to decline with age, largely at the hands of osteoarthritis. There are two primary drivers behind this age-related degeneration: wear and tear combined with a lack of regenerative resources.
While there isn’t much we can do to turn back the clock on wear and tear, we can replenish much-needed regenerative resources through stem cells, including mesenchymal stem cells.
As a practice that believes in working with the human body, rather than around it, Dr. Warren Bleiweiss and our team here at Alternative Disc Therapy can garner far more sustainable results for our patients. A great example of this success is our use of stem cells to counter arthritic joint pain — a problem that affects 1 in 4 adults in the United States.
Here’s a look at just a few of the many advantages of using stem cells to address joint health.
Tapping your own resources
The term autologous refers to tissues and cells (biologics) that come from your own body, which means we’re not introducing something foreign, but rather redirecting your own resources.
When you were nothing more than an embryo, your tiny body began to form thanks to the power of stem cells, which are the building blocks upon which all other cells are formed. Once you’re fully developed, your body still contains stem cells and other regenerative biologics, but they grow weaker, less responsive, and less numerous with age.
As an adult, many of your regenerative biologics are found in your bone marrow, which is where we prefer to harvest your biologics. Through a simple aspiration procedure, we draw the biologics out of your bone marrow and re-inject them into the damaged tissues in your joint(s). Since the bone marrow is from your own body, your joints readily and safely accept the introduced biologics, where they can go to work to heal and repair your tissues.
To your long-term joint health
The goal of our stem cells is to help your joints repair and rebuild themselves from within for long-lasting results. While steroid joint injections may temporarily relieve the pain and inflammation, they do nothing for the long-term health of your joint.
Through our treatments, we strengthen your joint properly to avoid damage from future injuries.
Avoid risky and irreversible surgery
Many people with severe osteoarthritis turn to joint replacement surgery, which not only carries a certain amount of risk, it also irreversibly alters the structure of your joint(s).
This type of interventional approach to your joint health comes with considerable cost, downtime, and the aforementioned risk, such as infection.
With stem cells, we avoid these downsides of surgical intervention and safely work with your body, rather than against it, to restore your joint health.
A case in point
We’ve had great success improving the joint health of our patients through stem cells, which are substantiated by independent studies.
For example, one study that included patients with moderate-to-severe knee osteoarthritis found that after three courses of bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells, participants reported a significant reduction in pain and improved quality of life. As important, none reported any serious adverse side effects from the treatments.
